GUIDANCE ON GLYCOL ANTIFREEZE AND ITS USE IN INDUSTRIAL COOLING SYSTEMS

1. Uninhibited glycol based products can cause extensive corrosion damage to multi-metal systems. Please view our Antifreeze Articles & FAQ's section for examples of damage.

2. Water-Glycol systems without the correct inhibitors become acidic (pH drop) over time, leading to corrosion. Borax (Sodium Borate) is sometimes used to counteract this pH change but in isolation is not a proactive corrosion inhibitor.

3. Water-Glycol systems should be regularly monitored to ensure the required parametres (glycol %, pH, corrosion inhibitor level etc.) are being maintained.

4. Automotive antifreeze should not be used in industrial cooling systems, as the high levels of silicate therein can reduce heat transfer rates and precipitate as sludge.

5. Water-Glycol dilutions should preferably be made-up with demineralised water - which will help prevent scale and, in the case of stainless steel systems, attack by chlorides. (Chlorides cause corrosive pits in stainless steel systems). If demineralised water cannot be used then the next best solution would be 'softened' water, this will prevent scale but not attack from chlorides. To help overcome chloride ion attack always maintain the minimum recommended inhibitor reserve.

6. CoolFlow Glycols contain a range of proven corrosion, scale and biological inhibitors to maximise heat transfer efficiency and the operating life of industrial cooling systems.

OTHER GLYCOL SERVICES:
» Bespoke glycol blending to suit specific site requirements. Including colour dyes and taste additives.
» Free of charge (return to base) testing of water samples, including report. Subject to terms and conditions.
» Proportional dosing units, for automatic dosing of HydraTech products when system is topped-up.
» Supply of chiller test kits and program, for customers wishing to monitor on a more regular basis.
